An incredible story!
We decided to tell the remarkable story of how a small dog changed one man’s life.
Scotsman and professional runner Dion Leonard was participating in a challenging marathon across the Great Gobi Desert, which straddles China and Mongolia. The route was challenging, covering 250 kilometers, which took the runners six days to complete.

On the second day, just before the start, Dion noticed a small, nondescript stray dog with a coloring reminiscent of desert sand on the line with him. When the animal ran alongside Leonard, he was surprised, as were the other runners and all the organizers.
Dion thought the dog would quickly quit the race, but it endured the entire day’s journey, covering 37 kilometers. This was incredible. But even more astonishing was that the dog decided to continue the marathon, literally accompanying Leonard. However, due to the scorching desert sun, it succumbed to heatstroke, and the four-legged runner received medical attention from a team of medics on duty in a car following the marathoners.
The dog was named the marathon’s mascot and named Gobi after the venue. The four-legged runner completed the 100-kilometer race in four of the six days. Dion realized the dog had chosen him, so he simply couldn’t resist taking his new friend with him. But complications arose: transporting Gobi from China to Leonard’s homeland required official permission, which proved difficult to obtain. And he also needed funds.

The story took an unexpected turn. While Dion was busy sorting out bureaucratic issues, Gobi disappeared from view. But Leonard didn’t give up. He launched a crowdfunding campaign and managed to raise a full 15,000 British pounds of the 5,000 needed. He also posted a message on social media asking for help from caring people to find the lost dog. Later, the marathon runner himself traveled to the city where Gobi was last seen to post flyers with the help of volunteers.
Luckily, Gobi was found and finally arrived in Scotland. Dion is thrilled to have overcome all the difficulties and been reunited with his four-legged marathon companion. The dog has already made friends with her owner’s other pet and is thriving: she plays, sometimes sleeps with Leonard, and proudly strolls the streets.
Inspired by Gobi’s resilience and devotion, Dion, together with author Craig Borlase, wrote an entire book about his pet. Perhaps we’ll even see a movie based on these incredible, yet very real, events.
